Motherhood is the transformation of the woollen surface into a vivid expressionist field articulating the emotional topography of the maternal as connected to home and belonging. At the centre is a stylised human figure and a flowering tree is placed spanning the torso. The rounded seed-like form is also the soil or land on which the tree grows. Surrounding the central figure are architectural and mnemonic echoes – the window-pane frame of Makaan, my home on the lower right, and the sun peeping from between the mountains. This internal blossoming becomes a metaphor for the body as motherland, as generative earth and as a site where nurture and care converge. The dense, tactile surface of wool on which I paint with thick brushstrokes intensifies the multiple layered meanings of home, mother and land. Together, these form a powerful articulation of motherhood, both literal and figurative – as motherland, as regeneration and as the flowering earth itself. The boots placed at the bottom of the composition evoke the lived reality of the snow-clad mountains and labouring bodies, giving material grounding to the artwork. The artwork then brings together through motifs of flora, shelter, land, labour and the body itself, a multilayered and richly connotative vision of motherhood not only as biological fact but as geography, memory and motherland.
